The Expedition

Itinerary

In total we will drive 230km. About 45km/day

Day 1

We will start the day kayaking in the Ason, a wild salmon river. After lunch, we will do a rare via ferrata that emerges from a cave. In the evening, we will rest by the river side and prepare a BBQ.

Day 2

We start the day with a new ferrata, this time travelling inside a gorge and if we want more, we can link an additional ferrata and enjoy the Pico San Vicente views. After recovering some energy, we will visit a stunning cave full of rock art.

Day 3

Today we look for waterfalls and panoramic views that will make us think we are in Iceland. We can take the day easy or hike for 2-3h. In any case, we will cook an authentic paella for everybody. In the evening we will camp in an abandoned train station with views to the valley.

Day 4

Canyoning Day! Jumps, abseling, sliders we will enjoy one of the best canyons in the north of Spain and after we will have “Cocido Montanes” and “Lechazo” for lunch. ummm delicious!

Day 5

Time for the sea, we planned a tranquil day kayaking snorkeling and enjoying sea food. But if you feel adventurus, you can try to surf the cantabric waves.

Day 1 program preview

The day and night before: Tapas & Beach

  • The meeting point is a hidden beach surrounded by cliffs close to Laredo. It is the perfect place to spend a calm day.

  • If you are coming from Bilbao, spending the morning in the old town tasting the traditional “pintxos” (aka “tapas“) is a great option. You can park near the Bilbao Arena.

  • At 20:00 we will meet all of you to do an introduction and share the final plan for tomorrow and comming days. It takes around 1h.

  • 21:00 Dinner. Bring dinner because there are no restaurants close by.

  • 22:00 Sleep. We can sleep there but note that it has no services.

Morning: Kayaking

  • 8.30 - 10:00 Freetime and Breakfast: Enjoy your coffee with amazing sea views.

  • 10:00 Meeting point at Ampuero (20min from the sleeping place). We park the campers in “Parque la Presa” and go to Udalla to start the descend.

  • 10:30-13:00 Kayak in a wild salmon river. The Ason river is one of the few rivers in Spain that has no big dams keeping it wild and free for Salmons.

Lunch:

  • 13:00 - 15:30 Freetime and lunch around Ramales de la Victoria (15min from Ampuero). For traditional food, we recommend “Restaurante Fuente de la Vega” full menu (1st, 2nd, bread, drink and dessert) for 13€ or “Restaurante la Tierruca” for sandwiches and burgers, around 8€ pax including drink. In case you prefer to cook by yourself, there are supermarkets and a nice area by the river called “Cubillas”.

Afternoon: Via Ferrata

  • 15:30 Meeting point at the Sports Hall. Brief about gear usage and safety.

  • 16:00-19:00 Ferrata “Callejomadero” a rare ferrata that starts with a 30m rappel that puts us down in a cave in the middle of a dense forest. We will climb up and cross a long cable bridge.

  • 19:00-21:00 Freetime. In case you don´t have shower in your camper there are multiple options: pay the overnight in the camping (25€), go to the public swiming pool (3€) or take a shower in the gym or in the hostel (3€).

Dinner:

  • 21:00 Meeting point at area of “Cubillas” for BBQ. You can bring whatever you enjoy the most. In Ramales there are multiple supermarket with good quality and prices.

Resting:

  • We recommed the area of “Cubillas” it is by the river and has green areas, water, tables and toilets in summer.

  • Other option is the camping in Ramales (25€/night).
